Dear CIS Members, welcome to our newsletter for May 2012,

CIS Honorary President, Ms. Abbie Dann, would like to invite CIS Members to Cocktails at her home on May 31st to celebrate CIS`s 50th Anniversary. Besides wonderful drinks and appetizers prepared by the infamous Guga, the evening will also include raffles and a silent auction for a handmade Canadian themed quilt.

This past month saw a special visit from Her Excellency Sharon Johnston, wife of Canadian Governor General David Johnston to Casa Sao Jose. Also, CIS hosted a Luncheon in April by the generous Marilus Duate.

Do not miss all the exciting events going on in our Community News either, including the AMSOC Charity Dance and the INC Bazaar.

The CIS Calendar is out for 2012. We are still looking for volunteers to host a luncheon or help out with some Happy Hours.

See you at our next fundraiser event!

HER EXCELLENCY SHARON JOHNSTON
VISITS CASA SAO JOSE

Picture
Her Excellency Sharon Johnston
Last month Brazil recieved the Governor General of Canada David Johnston and his wife Sharon Johnston as part of an official visit.  Their mission was to increase partnerships in Education between Canada and Brazil.  Their visit included stops in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

While His Excellency was meeting with government and business officials, Her Excellency, Mrs. Johnson, had the opportunity to see some of the charities the CIS works with, notably the Casa São Jose Community Center, and Casa Madre Teadora dos Idosos.

Her Excellency toured both facilities but at the community center, Mrs. Jonhson gave a brief class on Canadian Geography, History, and Wildlife and had lunch with some of the students.  At the Casa dos Idosos, she made a donation of sheets and towels.  In addition to leaving a lasting memory among the members of both charities, Mrs. Johnson left several books on Canada for the children and adults to enjoy.

We were also fortunate to have CIS past Presidents Margarita Arsenault and Anna Sharpin and current President Priya  Guyadeen who accompanied Her Excellency on her visit, and were able to provide a wealth of information regarding the history of how these organization came into being.

Ex-CIS President Receives Award from the Governor General for her Contribution to Community Development

A LETTER FROM EX CIS PRESIDENT MARGARITA ARSENAULT

Congratulations to the CIS as it celebrates its 50th anniversary!

To the new members a big welcome and to the longtime members thank you for keeping this multi-cultural group moving forward.

When I think back on my time with the CIS, I feel grateful for the friends I made and the opportunities I had to get involved in the community.

Arriving in SP can be a daunting experience, learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, getting to know the 3rd largest city in the world and getting around in it. But most of all making friends and finding the day-to-day support we take for granted back home.So I am grateful that in the CIS I found friendship and a group of dedicated women that got together to make a difference where it really mattered.

When I first got involved, the board went through a time of soul searching as to what it’s orientation and mission should be. After much reflection it was decided to focus on a larger project that would have a sustainable impact on the community.

We were very excited to take on this new challenge and focus on the construction and the development of the Casa Sao Jose in Jardim Sao Luis. Knowing Irma Natalina’s energy and drive we felt we could contribute to her dream and make it a reality. Little did we know that it would take over 5 years to complete.

Part of Irma’s outreach community projects were also the nursing home, and the daycare center, Casa do Menino Jesus right in the top of the favela, both projects that we fostered and supported.

We had many great community activities days that both our members and corporate sponsors participated in building, painting and entertaining the local children.

Events… the truth be known, there were many members that needed an excuse to get their husbands out to dance, so we created opportunities with many dinner dance events that turned out to be great fundraisers.

And our fashion shows were a highlight in the expat and diplomatic communities.

As an organization we were fortunate to have the strong support and commitment of our Canadian Consul General and as I can see this remains true today.

On a more personal level I was involved at the orphanage in Santo Amaro where I mentored young girls. We developed a sponsor program through which individual CIS members supported the education of kids at the orphanage. We were able to see 5 young people graduate from a local private secondary school. I also had an opportunity to organize the medical and surgical interventions for young children.

When in Sao Paulo I’m always pleased to visit the Casa and this time I was especially pleased to accompany Her Excellency Mrs. Sharon Johnston.

I’d like to wish you the best in all your endeavors and the celebration of your 50th anniversary.

Um abraco,

Margarita

CIS CHARITY UPDATE

Picture
A little can change a lot, and all of your donations matter!

Since February, residents of the Prestes Maia apartment complex in Santo André have been engaged in activities to revitalize and beautify the areas surrounding the community, as part of the Jovens Lideranças Ambientais/Ação em Conjunto project that has been supported by CIS since 2010.Through weekly community work parties that bring together at least 25 adults, teenagers and children, an abandoned lot is being transformed into a green space.   An area where people used to dump construction debris and old furniture will have benches, tables, and gardens--all built with recycled materials and low-cost construction techniques.

Whether it’s through monetary gifts, in-kind donations or volunteering, CIS would like to ask its members to help JLA conclude
the Green Space Revitalization Project.

Here are some items that JLA needs for the Green Space Revitalization Project and the charity’s regular day-to-day work:
•       Sturdy benches and picnic tables
•       Playground equipment
•       Donations toward the purchase of a "radio bicicleta" - a portable, bicycle-powered sound system built by local artists
•       Used or new laptop computer and/or cellphone with internet access
Above all, visitors and volunteers are always welcome! The work parties will continue on April 21st and 28th, from 8:30am to 1:30pm.  The area is easily accessible by CPTM train, or a 45 minute drive from São Paulo.

Please contact Thais at caridade@cisbrazil.org to donate. For more information, please visit http://www.acao.jovensliderancas.org/index.html or the "Conjunto Prestes Maia" page on Facebook.

50 Years of CIS History

Picture
The year is 1962. The place is São Paulo, Brazil—a city of 12 million people—many of whom are well below the U.N. levels of poverty. Father Corbet, a Canadian priest working in one of the poorer neighborhoods in São Paulo approaches a group of Canadian women—all friends—and asks for their help in setting up a home for abandoned babies. The wife of the Canadian Consul General, Mrs. Andrea Holton and the wife of the Vice-Consul, Mrs. Helen Gaynor hear the call and found an organization which did and continues to do charitable work and fund-raising until today— 50 years later.

CIS will be celebrating this remarkable achievement with a series of fundraising events throughout the whole year. The first is the CIS Traditional Luncheon on March 28th, very fitting since luncheons were the main source of funds for the CIS over all those years. We honor this tradition as often as we can and through the very generous men and woman who volunteer to host these events.

For more on CIS History, visit our history page.

Next Event: Luncheon
50 Years of Great Food and Great Company!

Picture
Caption: This is from a Luncheon at Nonie's in 2008
Before all the Happy Hours, Hockey nights and BBQs, CIS regularly hosted luncheons as its main source of fund-raising. Long-time CIS member Marilus Duarte would like to invite all members, new or long-time, to come and bring photos, documents, and memorabilia from over the years and celebrate this achievement at her home on March 28th at 12h30.  Even if you are new to CIS, this is a great opportunity to get to know the deep history of CIS, the amazing people who built this group and hear all the crazy stories from back then (hint “ask about the belly dancing”).

We are counting on you to keep the memories alive!

Thank you Marilus for hosting this event and Olga Josiger for co-hosting. Address and time information will be supplied upon RSVP to secretaria@cisbrazil.org. Entry donation - R$ 40,00. Those who have not renewed their membership will be able to do so there.

Events Meeting - a little wet!

Ilka and Sandy hosted an events meeting on March 12th at the Andiamo Restaurant to gather support for all the events coming up this year. Unfortunately due to a rain storm the turnout was low. CIS wants to thank Isabel for showing so much interest in helping out both for events and also for contacting potential sponsors!

If you want to help but could not make it to this meeting, just send us an e-mail at eventos@cisbrazil.org, giving us your name, contact telephone number and what you might be interested in doing. We will be having Skype meetings in the next few months to carry on organizing the events.

Some of the tasks in which you might be interested, include:
- Contacting venues & suppliers
- Helping organize our April Golf Happy Hour
- Helping to follow-up with possible sponsors by phone
- Going into town to pick-up donated goods with one of our charities
- Helping pick-up food and beverages
- Hosting or co-hosting a traditional CIS week luncheon in May or November
- Hosting or co-hosting a happy hour in August
- Organizing decorations, flowers, entertainment or catering for one or more of our events

- Writing to potential sponsors for our Gala Dinner in October
- Helping set up on the day for one of our big events
- Helping with RSVPing
- Designing tickets, fliers and information

And if you have any special talents or ideas - please let us know! Whatever you can do, we will have fun doing it for a good cause.

Charities Update

Thank you all for your participation at the AGM in February, with your membership fee renewals we are $1400 closer to purchasing a specialized diaper machine for the Casa Madre Teadora dos Idosos.  We are still in need of R$5600 to reach our charities' ultimate goal.  Your participation at CIS' next event, 50th Anniversary Luncheon, will get us closer to that target!

If you can't make it to the event, sponsorships are welcome any day!  To fully or partially sponsor the machine, please contact Thais caridade@cisbrazil.org.

The new CIS Board was decided on at the CIS Welcome Back BBQ, graciously hosted by the Bohlen Family. This event raised R$ 1400 through the event fee and by renewed CIS memberships! WAY TO GO!

Thanks to all the guests for bringing such delicious dishes and for participating in choosing the new Board. With the entrance of a new President, Priya, we also said good-bye to Anna, the leaving President. Anna was central in the revitalization of CIS in the last 2 years and was responsible for many new changes to the society. With her Board, she modernized all the documentation process within the group and putout the electronic newsletter together, to name a few contributions. She also put forth the society name change to include our growing male membership. Thank you Anna for all your contributions to CIS and the CIS charities.

Our new President brings a wealth of experience in leadership and we all look forward to the 2012 year. The bios for the new Board are on our Website.

LETTER FROM NEW CIS PRESIDENT PRIYA

Picture
Photo: Priya Guyadeen, new CIS President
Dear Members:

I very excited to be serving as President for CIS this 2012. I hope to continue the success of my predecessor in promoting the organization and its activities.

I am a Canadian who has been living in Brazil for the past 10 years now. I've long
had an interest in volunteering, and working the CIS provides me with the perfect
opportunity to give back to the community.

In addition to growing membership this year, the organization plans to support the charities in which it has already established a strong relationship such as Casa Sao Jose, Casa Madre Teadora dos Idosos and Projeto Sol to name a couple .

We are also planning several exciting social activities for calendar year, in order to get to know our members better and bring you closer to the organization.

We look forward to very prosperous year, and hope that with your support the CIS can continue to grow and maintain its long standing tradition in Sao Paulo.

Sincerely,

Priya Guyadeen
CIS President

NEXT CIS FUNDRAISING GOAL

Picture
Photo: A friendly face at the Casa Madre Theodora dos Idosos
CIS is looking forward to meeting our next fundraising goal, which is to purchase a specialized diaper machine for the Casa Madre Teadora dos Idosos. These products are quite expensive and put a burden on the centre's finances. The machine will allow for cost effective supply for both the elderly house and for the daycare centre that Irma Natalina also runs in the same community.

The cost of such a machine is about R$ 7,000 which we hope to raise in the next couple of events and through our membership fee.

If you would like to join CIS or would like to renew your membership for 2012, you may do so my emailing Sabrina or by attending our next event.

CIS CALENDAR 2012

The CIS is still looking for volunteers to help out in planning some of the upcoming events. The tentative calendar for 2012 is as follows:

April – Fashion Show Fundraiser in conjunction with INC
May- CIS 50th Anniversary Fundraiser
July - Canada Day BBQ Fundraiser
September - Day at the Races (Jockey Club)
October – CIS Gala Night Fundraiser

Also, we are looking for generous volunteers to host the traditional CIS luncheon at their homes. These important lunches are the foundation of the CIS and we hope we can get a few of these events throughout the year. If you are interested in hosting or helping out in any of these events, please contact Ilka.

NEEDING SUPPORT for CIS 50th ANNIVERSARY

Picture
This May marks the 50th Anniversary of CIS! We will celebrate this remarkable acheivement by hosting a Fundraising event in May. To make this a successful fundraiser, the CIS Board is in need of support. We are looking for:
  • A VENUE
  • SPONSORSHIP
Please go through your contacts to find a possible venue in Sao Paulo to host the event and also for personal or corporate sponsorship for this fundraiser. Feel free to pass this newsletter out to your email contacts or contact CIS President Priya to get an official CIS sponsorship request letter.

Lets mark this great event by working together and raising lots of money for our charities!

NEEDING CIS SPONSORSHIP CHAIRPERSON

Picture
The CIS is still looking for a volunteer to be our contact person for sponsors in Brazil. The society depends on both the generous donations during our events and memberships but also from corporate sponsorship throughout the year. We are looking for someone who could play the role of contacting past sponsors and search for new ones. If you know someone who could volunteer to this important task, please contact Priya. Volunteering with the CIS is a rewarding experience both is terms of the contributing to the well-being of vulnerable community members but also in getting involved with such an international group of people. Please contact CIS President Priya for more information on this great opportunity.

Dear CIS Members, welcome to our newsletter for December 2011.

The CIS held its annual Xmas Party on December 3rd, hosted again by Abbie Dann. It was a great time to celebrate another great fundraising year with fellow members. BIG thank you to everyone who brought presents for the Casa Madre Teodora dos Idosos!

On December 10th, a group of holiday-spirited CIS members got together to bring the presents collected at the Xmas party to the Casa. It was great to see friendly faces and some new faces too at the residence.

On behalf of the CIS, I wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday season. We hope to see you all again next year for another fundraising season filled with great food and fantastic company!

Happy Holidays to all from CIS!

CIS XMAS PARTY FILLED WITH HOLIDAY CHEER!

The CIS ended the year in traditional style with its annual Potluck Christmas Party at the Residence of Canadian Consul General and CIS Honorary President Abbie Dann. The night kicked off with a cocktail hour with a tri-lingual performance from Minas Gerais-native Sonia Andrade and her pianist Hercules (www.soniaandrade.com.br). After dinner, guests gathered around the piano to sing along some good ol’ holiday carols with Hercules and Sonia.

The event was attended by around 70 of our members, and their family and friends, and was a great way to celebrate the end of another successful year for the CIS.

Dinner was a Potluck with everyone contributing a delicious array of food, including two huge turkeys prepared by the Residence's own Chef Walner.

Thanks to the generous donations from all of the guests, we also collected over 50 gifts of bed sheets and bath towels to donate to the Casa Madre Teodora dos Idosos!

Thanks so much to Abbie Dann for kindly hosting us in her home once again, to all Abbie's hardworking staff who made the event possible, and of course all the CIS Members and their families who bought along food and gifts.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR THE CASA DOS IDOSOS

On December 10th, a group of CIS members gathered to visit the Casa Madre Teodora dos Idosos and deliver the presents collected at the CIS Xmas Party. We were welcomed by the amazing staff at the Casa and of course by the incredible residents, many of whom we are getting to know well, after several visits this year.

The residence homes over 70 elderly people, the majority without family. On behalf of CIS and the staff at the Casa, I would like to thank all the guests from the Xmas party for their very kind donations and to all the people who have participated in any CIS event this year. Their donations are much needed and appreciated at the Casa dos Idosos!

CANADA FACT CORNER

The day Jean left on his 75,000 km walk
This month’s fact corner is dedicated to an incredible Canadian by the name of Jean Béliveau who is just a few kilometers away from accomplishing the impossible. On August 18th, 2000, at 9:00 am, Jean left Montreal, Canada. His goal: to walk around the planet to promote "Peace and non-violence for the profit of the children of the world". He is travelling alone with a three-wheeled stroller that holds a bit of food, his clothing, a First Aid kit, a small tent and a sleeping bag.

This 11 year journey is in support of the United Nations proclamation: 2001-2010 - International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World. Jean walked across all the continents, from North America to South America, then crossed to South Africa, up to Europe, then the Middle East, South and Eastern Asia, Australia, New Zealand and finally back to Canada. He is in the Ottawa region right now and hopes to make it back home to his extremely patient wife in Montreal by the end of October. To follow Jean’s unbelievable journey, please visit his Website at http://wwwalk.org/en/ . Way to go Jean!

CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER IS CIS'S
100TH MEMBER

Picture
Photo Caption: Marcio, the Casa Communitario Capoeira teacher, greets Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper
Prime Minister Stephen Harper became the Canadian International Society’s (CIS) 100th member while also accepting Honorary CIS Member status.

The Prime Minister personally chose to visit Casa São José, a long-time CIS beneficiary, on his visit to São Paulo on Tuesday August 9th, 2011. A pinnacle point for CIS, the event started off with a capoeira presentation for the Prime Minister who was accompanied by: Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Baird; Minister of International Trade, Ed Fast; and Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), Diane Ablonczy. The demonstration was performed by local children and their teacher, Marcio, which the CIS sponsors. The children are from various age groups, girls and boys, and come from the Jd. São Luiz neighbourhood. CIS also is responsible for part of the construction costs from the Centre and the dentistry program they run.

Following this traditional Brazilian dance, the PM and Ministers experienced a traditional Brazilian churrasco. There, the Prime Minster was awarded his CIS Honorary Member certificate and was commemorated for being the 100th CIS member. The Prime Minister also honoured Irma Natalina with flowers, who is the founder and heart of the Centre. For more media photos and a video of the Prime Minister's visit:

CANADIAN FACT CORNER

Picture
Being founded by woman, CIS has a particular interest in woman in the spotlight. With the recent visit of Prime Minister Stephen Harper to CIS beneficiary Casa São José, we would like to dedicate this Canadian Fact Corner to Laureen Teskey Harper, wife of Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada.

Laureen was born in a rural town in the Rocky Mountains, southwest of Calgary. She studied photography and graphic art and after graduation she spent six months travelling in Africa where she visited 13 different countries. She returned to Calgary and was employed for many years as a graphic artist.

Laureen started her own business in Calgary in 1989 until 2002 where she moved to Ottawa after her husband was elected Leader of the Official Opposition. Laureen's volunteer efforts involve computer work for a local elementary school's annual book sale and the local library. She also offers her home to the Ottawa Humane Society as a foster home for kittens.

In her spare time she enjoys riding her motorcycle. Yes, motorcycle, and also enjoys photography and gardening.

INVITATION TO CIS TRADITIONAL LUNCHEON
AUGUST 25TH

Before all the Happy Hours, Hockey nights and BBQs, CIS regularly hosted luncheons as its main source of fund-raising. These important monthly events were the foundation of CIS in raising money for our charities and a great way to socialize amongst members. With a changing membership, luncheons have been harder to organize but we would like to honor this CIS tradition and the members who have been so dedicated to CIS over the years. Long time member Karen has graciously volunteered to host the CIS Luncheon which will be on Thursday August 25th at 12pm.

The CIS Board would like to extend the invitation to host a traditional luncheon to all members. For those interesting, please contact rsvp@cisbrazil.org or Anna, CIS President at 8455-1649.

CIS VISIT TO CASA DOS IDOSOS

Picture
CIS paid a visit to the Casa dos Idosos (elderly home that CIS sponsors) this month to evaluate their needs and also to spend some time with the residents. We were warmly welcomed by the Centre’s Director, Irma Natalina and by the residents. After getting a tour of the facilities, which have recently being updated, the group sat with the residents to chit chat and hear stories. The Director let us know that they appreciate our support and that more help is always needed. As CIS and the Irma Natalina decide on appropriate donations, there are plans to return soon and make visits more regular. CIS member Vanessa is our new beneficiaries coordinator and will facilitate visits and regular contact with the Casa dos Idosos and with our other social groups.

For more information about donating or volunteering opportunities please contact Vanessa at caridade@cisbrazil.org . Also, see the Centre’s Website at www.casadoidoso.org.br

We would like to welcome 4 new members, announce upcoming events and share a special message from the Jovens Lideranças Ambientais project in response to a recent CIS donation.

CIS CANADA DAY BBQ A SUCCESS

Canada’s 144th birthday was celebrated by the CIS in the beautiful countryside outside of Cabreuva, at new member Ron’s family sitiu.  Hotdogs and Hamburgers (and cupcakes) were the main course for this Canadian style BBQ enjoyed by 30 CIS members, their families and friends.  Canadian flags were flying high at this event which beyond celebrating Canada’s birthday, also raised over R$1,000 for CIS charities.  Many thanks are sent out to Ron and Sandy who generously hosted and to Jaime and others for their dedication and enthusiasm in organizing this event.

CANADIAN FACT CORNER

Picture
This Canada Day was one of many birthday parties held across Canada and around the world by Canadian expats and Canada enthusiasts.  It all began on a balmy summer day in London, England in 1867 when Queen Victoria signed the British North America Act.  This was the first in a series of acts that made up Canada’s constitution and formed a nation.  Although not an independent nation as the Act still kept legislative control in the hands of the British Monarchy.  They also kept control over Canada’s foreign policy right up until after the Second World War.  In fact, it wasn’t until 1931 that Canada had its first embassy abroad (Washington D.C.), which makes the National Hockey League (NHL) older than Canada’s Foreign Service!

LETTER FROM CIS BENEFICIARY

Hello to everyone at CIS!

We're thrilled that CIS support will allow us to offer open air environmental film nights on a regular basis, through the purchase of our own projector.  Since we started these movie nights in January of 2010, we have found that they are great way to build community spirit and promote messages related to environmental conservation and social change.  With the equipment donated by CIS, we plan to show the film in at least 10 communities around the city.

The Jovens Lideranças Ambientais/Young Environmental Leaders project work s with environmental education and community development in the Conjunto Prestes Maia, a public housing complex in the city of Santo André, São Paulo. For more information about JLA, click here.

Donations (current needs include a used cell phone and a laptop computer in good condition), suggestions, visitors and volunteers are always welcome!   The CIS board and all the YEL project coordinators and participants would like to extend a special invitation to CIS members to participate in the very first movie night with the CIS projector - we'll let you know the date as soon as we have it.

For more information, please see our websites, www.jovensliderancas.org, www.mddf.org.br, and www.almaambiental.org.br

CIS Celebrated its 49th Year!

This past May marked the Canadian International Society’s (CIS) 49th year of existence in Sao Paulo. The CIS celebrated in style by hosting a Happy Hour at Ms Abbie Dann’s home, the Canadian Consul General in Sao Paulo, on May 25th. It was a great occasion to also commemorate the group’s new name. The Happy Hour gathered over 80 guests to recognize the groups’ members while raising over R$ 1,800 for Sao Paulo charities and 14 new members join. Many thanks goes to our host, Ms Abbie Dann, Thais for her coordination of the event and many more who contributed so much time to create such a successful night, including our sponsors listed below.

Ronn, a member since the beginning of the year, has offered us his small country house, which sits on a hill just outside of Cabreúva for Canada Day. The pool will be too cold, but we will have a Canadian barbecue and good company.

Cabreúva is a small town near the city of Itú and the protected nature reserve, Serra do Japi. Located on the Estrada dos Romeiros, the old road from São Paulo to Itú that follows the Tietê river and still serves as a pilgrimage route, Cabreúva was the center of a sugar cane farming community and used to be known for its cachaça. The terrain here is hilly is made up mostly of nature reserves, small farms and country houses. Do not forget to invite friends and/ or family to this event!

Letter from long-time CIS Member Anneke

Dear CIS,

My congratulations to the new board on the realization of once only a dream and now a reality, the New name for our Society "The CIS". It is really amazing how this Society has been turned around, was saved from termination, and has been adapted to the new Millennium.

Wonderful work done, congratulation to all and many, many happy years to come of fun and good successful social work. Would have loved to be with you at the Inauguration Happy Hour, but instead I am cycling and walking on the Dutch beaches, in other words enjoying being in Holland. Mia`s health documents (my Brazilian dog) are now ok, and she will be ready to enter the UK as from September 29th 2011!!! It seems that we will have been able to avoid the 6 months quarantine time.

If any of you CIS members are coming over to Holland in the near future please email me or give me a call, would love to see you.

Abraços,

Anneke Chatwin

CIS Happy Hour Sponsors

Many heartfelt thanks to our sponsors at our Happy Hour in May. Without their support, we could not have raised so much for our charities.
